RETREAT GUEST CAT FROM VENTURA My name is Cat Darst. I'm 40 years old and I live in Ventura, CA. I started surfing 10 years ago and spent 6 of those years playing around on a longboard and funshapes. About four years ago, I took a trip to Costa Rica and got pounded at a beach break and decided that I wanted to learn to surf something smaller and more maneuverable, like a fish. This was a great decision, but I've been shocked by how hard it has been to really learn to ride a little board well. I went on a Papaya Wellness surf retreat in southern Nicaragua one year ago and learned a ton from Chapin. Three things stand out for me from that experience. First, Chapin was consistently supportive. His energy in the water made me feel relaxed and comfortable in surf that was bigger than I was used to. Second, his technique recommendations to get my back foot back and to shift my weight between my feet has been revolutionary in my surfing. I still don't always execute these skills every wave, but I can recognize what I need to do and when it comes together it's amazing. Third, Chapin suggested that I work to simply catch more waves, surf more. We all know we need to do this, but Chapin's helpful and encouraging way of recommending this put a different spin on it. I've watch my progression video many times in the year since I was coached by Chapin and it helps to remind me what I need to keep working on and how far I've come. If you want to learn some surfing skills that are guaranteed to challenge you and improve your surfing, I highly recommend getting coaching with Chapin. It was a great week!

RETREAT GUEST CRISSY FROM CALIFORNIA Hey there! My name is Crissy and I live in Venice, CA where I've been surfing for about 12 years. When I met Chapin I had been coasting the line between beginner/ intermediate level for a few years and wanted to step up my game. My goal was to get comfortable in bigger waves and confident riding backside. Chapin helped me improve all that and more! From the first day he gave detailed feedback about wave assessment, paddling, pop-up and stance. He pushed me to go all out every session. It's amazing that the slightest tweaks made huge impact and those changes keep me getting better to this day. I still go back to videos from that week to review corrections and see my progress. Today my surfing is solidly at the intermediate level and moving into advanced. This picture is from my last session just after riding a beautiful 8ft bomb! I still smile just thinking about it ;-)

WHAT TO EXPECT?

Tons of surfing!

I make it my personal mission to get you into as many waves as possible. Let’s face it if you’re not riding waves you’re not progressing.

The video coaching is key. Seeing yourself surf can be sobering but also extremely helpful. Our nightly video breakdows help me show you what your doing so you can take my tips and techniques and incorporate them into the next session.

In the water we pay close attention to each surfer. I rotate my time between everyone and help you make immediate adjustments. I’ll help you get waves and sometimes surf behind you instructing you on what to do.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

If you’re just starting out you’ll learn how to position yourself in the line up, perfect your pop-up and how to catch and ride every wave. You’ll leave with a foundation of knowledge and skills that will help you continue progressing into the future.

If you’re at the intermediate level we’ll work on things like perfecting your pop-up, learning to turn and positioning yourself in the line-up.
